About Us
Welcome to Net Family News!
Baby-boomers were the first generation of parents and teachers of kids in cyberspace, and now we're joined by Gen X parents as well. With 125 million kids (under 18)* online - working, communicating, and playing in an environment sometimes hostile to their best interests - Internet literacy has become an essential part of parenting and of working with children. The best way to help our kids have safe, constructive times online is for us to keep informed about this new environment and engaged in their online experiences. The weekly Net Family Newsletter, distributed in partnership with SafeKids.com and Childnet International, helps adults do just that.
Net Family News is the journal-of-record on all aspects of kids and digital media. There is no other publication of its kind on or off the Net. For six years this free nonprofit news service has been covering...
- Online safety and privacy news and tools
- New technologies and Web resources for kids
- Research about the impact of digital media on kids
- Legislation affecting children's online experience
- School and library Net-use policy
- How Web-literate kids, parents, and teachers are using the Internet.
Our weekly newsletter is delivered via email to subscribers throughout North America and more than 50 countries on every continent. It's archived here in our Web site. We provide daily kid-tech news in our blog and via an RSS news feed (click on the headlines on the left-hand side of our partners' home pages - SafeKids.com, Netmom.com, and Childnet International, which has the headlines moving across the middle of its page, ticker-tape-style).
Net Family News is unique in four ways:
- Our daily and weekly frequencies and multi-format approach provide maximum online accessibility to parents (we hope some day to have the resources to provide a print edition)
- We're a parent-driven service, filtering tech news for fellow parents and, with permission, publishing the family-tech stories and issues they send in - as well as relevant news on the education front.
- Having covered this field for nearly a decade, we're a clearinghouse for tech-parenting expertise in all directions - that of our readers themselves, as well as researchers, policymakers, children's advocates, and businesspeople providing products and services for kids and families.
- We're a "community newspaper" of the Digital Age - the information source for and communications node of a vibrant, worldwide interest community: grownups with young tech users' best interests in mind.
First formed in mid-1997 as SageNet, the organization evolved into The Sage Family, then began the process in September 1998 of reorganizing as a non-profit called Net Family News, Inc. We've published an online-parenting newsletter since the beginning, and the Net Family Newsletter will continue to be the core of our expanding services to parents.
